Poetry

Broken Open

It is the break in my heart
that opened it
ending the long, cold excile
prolonged adolescence
cold, level oblivion
my only God
nothing ventured, nothing lost
I may mourn my lost innocence
but my heart
broken open
carries me to greener and blacker pastures
deeper calm
darker temptation
and loftier victory
death, once abstract
now ever-present
not as threat but
simple reminder
that life too is here, now.
