Bear

The almighty dollar
Rings a bell and
calls its followers to worship.
All over the world
adherents bow in supplication.
By Money’s dim sordid light
mountains are destroyed
trees burned
and people starved.
Human wreckage dots the
landscape like happy little clouds
in a Bob Ross painting.
Somewhere in the Catskills
a bear walks along a ledge
and two hikers follow
not considering the danger
waiting where the tracks end,
grateful for the bear’s trailblazing.
They’d like to get back to
the marked trail before dark
so they follow
against all advice concerning bears.
They don’t find a path.
They find silence and snow,
fir trees and stone.
Maybe they see God
