Fuel for the Revolution

This is my blog. I started it back in 1998 when the term "blog" was new and I'd certainly never heard of it. At the time I didn't know I was blogging, I just wanted to post some non- edited pieces I'd written in my notebooks. I do not revise or censor this material in any way. Please feel free to email me through the "contact" page on this site if you have anything to say about what you read here.

Mercy

I cry sometimes just because I am alive
I look around at this world and cry
at girls raised to nod and smile
and boys raised to violence
I try to keep my chin up
I'm told only the strong survive
but I look around and see these strong
standing on the backs of the unlucky
but then again I refuse to believe
in luck in any serious way.
I choose instead to believe in mercy.
There would be no such thing as hard luck
if we all excercised a little more mercy
and hope would run like cool rivers
through our lands if we all reached out our hands
every day.
I know in my head that hard luck is here to stay
but my heart needs to believe
things will change someday
and so I work and I pray
and dream of that someday
and try to be a comfort to those I can touch.
But I've also been taught so much
that is wrong.
How to fear and loathe and despise
and judge and criticize
but mostly how to run and hide.
My prayer for today is that I can stand someplace
and fight for peace, hope, and love
the only 3 things worth fighting for.
In my own inner life I have been a runner
from pain and joy alike
in the world I now stand
and I refuse to run and hide
I'll take my lumps out in the world
steel my hide for piercing

Maybe part of my heart will forever remain hidden
but the parts I let go I will let go all the way,
and my hands will be in the world fully
working untill they are sore and then working some more,
even when my heart is cold and distant. This usually brings me back when I wander.

Justice never rests.
I want my daughters to never have
to be undressed by eyes with violence behind them
or touched by hands that are not the hands of love.
I want my sons to never have to take life
or close their hearts to the world
so I cry and I bend my back for a long, long fight
every day a chance at mercy.
