brokeIt was only when I broke myself that I finally understood how to begin to truly love the broken of this world, without fear and without judgement. I found myself at the bottom with no hope and no faith and was faced with a simple choice: get help or die. I had enough of a shred of either self-esteem or chicken-shit fear of death or both to finally give up my stubborn fight and ask for help, never even considering the gift I was giving the helper just by trusting them and asking. As I was nursed back to life I began to finally understand in my heart what I'd always known and believed intellectually: that we are all related and are all in this together. In the past I'd had fleeting moments of feeling part of something bigger than myself. Most of these moments had come at times when I was helping someone, but I hadn't taken the time to acknowledge this. Now I was on the other side of it, as the one being helped. My prayer is that as I continue to grow I will always be able to look at a person, no matter how broken, and see the dim glow of what is good in them, what was made in God's image and is part of the Great Mystery. I think that if I can continue to have compassion for myself and forgive myself for my imperfection, I can be open to seing the good in others and doing my small part to help that good rise to the surface and radiate into the world. I say I THINK this because I know that based on my past track record I am doomed to fail at least some of the time, and probably most of the time, if I try to walk this walk alone. Fortunately every time I stumble a hand is there. This is God's grace, to me. Our hands reaching out in the darkness to wipe a tear or carry a burden for a friend, stranger, or even an enemy. These are God's hands. I don't go in for that "original sin" stuff but I do see that in some way we are all broken by this sometimes brutal world. We are so fragile. But we shine with God's light in our most broken parts. Dan Bern has a line in his song Thanksgiving Day Parade "I love whoever's next to me, I love them so so much. They let me lean against them like a beautiful crutch." This is what life is all about!!! Mitakuye Oyasin. We are one. Thanks for reading this! Sunday, February 24th 2008 |
