Kurt Vonnegut, Indian PointTalk about irony. As I watch a youtube video of the now diseased, wonderful writer, thinker, and social commentator Kurt Vonnegut, out my window I hear, for about the 10th time in the past 2 weeks, the blare of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant's "emergency sirens," being tested so much that they will no longer mean anything to anyone if there is a major emergency. Being tested to remind us that "Entergy, the corporation which runs the plant now, is on top of things and they are keeping us safe." With sirens which at best will cause confusion and chaos in our region as we try in vain to get the hell out in the event of an emergency. I understand people around here work for Entergy.... All I ask for is the truth, for once. The story about the leaks at Indian Point, a nuclear plant built on a major fault-line, by the way, changes daily. We know we couldn't trust the NY State Power Authority to give us the truth and now we are supposed to trust a publicly-traded corporation? Once we are dead or dying of radiation poisoning like the thousands in Russia after Chernobyl, it'll be too late to lay off all of these employees and hire them back to build beautiful, sleek, windmills like those found on the North Sea in Germany, the greenest country in the industrial world. Germany comitted a genocide which was more highly publicized then ours was.... Do we need to comit a more publicized genocide before we will feel enough guilt or shame to finally take responsibility for our world, our future as a species, and the living conditions of human beings in general, American and otherwise? And who will publicize this genocide (which is going on in many ways and in many forms already around the world?) NBC? CBS? FOX? ABC? Clear Channel? HA!!!!!! MORE LIES are what we will get from these publicy-traded slave corporations, beholden to the "Wall Street Crap-shoot." Sunday, April 15th 2007 |
