Abortion and GunsGrowing up around conservative people, particularly Christian conservatives, I've run into people who are Anti-choice (they call it "pro-life,") but against laws limiting automatic weapons in any way. I've never understood this. A woman should not be allowed to end her pregnancy but a person should be allowed to own a weapon designed to kill many people quickly in war. For arguments sake, let's say "life" begins at conception. Pro-lifers believe abortion is murder. So a woman should not be allowed to choose not to "kill" this one life. She is not to be trusted to make this decision. On the other hand, a person should be allowed to choose not to kill many people quickly with a weapon of war. This makes no sense. No abortion because it is killing but it is ok to have a gun designed to kill many people quickly, we'll just trust you not to use it. That's just crazy... I don't believe "life," as in "to live, a verb" starts at conception, so maybe that changes the argument for me a bit, but even if I did if I was so interested in protecting human life why would I be for people having automatic weapons, or hand guns, when you really think about it? hunting rifles were designed to kill animals, which can be for food. The circle of life and all that. I'm talking about tools designed to kill humans. Anyhow, I used to say I was "anti-abortion but pro-choice." This was a very naive viewpoint, I now realize. Now I'm pro-choice. Period. If a woman wants to have an abortion, that is up to her. If I am the father and she wants to involve me in that decision, great, but that is also up to her. As a man I have no right to be involved in any way, unless invited. And oh yeah- anytime the folks fighting for sane gun laws want me to come play at an event, I'm there if at all possible. I do want to take away your guns. All that metal- maybe we can melt it down and make microphones and bicycles, instead of guns. You hunters- make your venison stew and if you must hunt with a gun watch out for the buckshot-you could lose a filling- and use a condom! Be careful out there. Respect the deer. It is alive. Abortion and guns. Now can we talk about capital punishment? Sunday, May 20th 2018 |
