Fuel for the Revolution

This is my blog. I started it back in 1998 when the term "blog" was new and I'd certainly never heard of it. At the time I didn't know I was blogging, I just wanted to post some non- edited pieces I'd written in my notebooks. I do not revise or censor this material in any way. Please feel free to email me through the "contact" page on this site if you have anything to say about what you read here.

Instilling Values

You can teach your children whatever you want to, but how you live and what you do will instill values and ideas in them. Once something is instilled, it is very hard to unlearn. It is easy to "decide" to disagree with instilled values, but living that disagreement is a different story. Whether it is racism, homophobia, classism, sexism, or any other ism, once it is instilled in a person, especially by parental example, it is going to take a long process of habit-breaking and the practice of different living to overcome the wrong value which has been instilled. We all, in our adult lives, grapple with this process. We are all wounded by instilled values at some point. In my opinion these wounds are the primary reason for failed marriages and all other forms of relationship pain and strife. Being "modern" people and having either been to therapy or at least having taken at least one psychology class at some point doesn't necessarily help because knowing something and living it are two very different things. Today I am dealing with the sexism I was raised in. My Mother did eventually rebel and change things in our house, but the damage was done. Her rebelling happened when I was in my teens and I was aware of it. That example does help me fight the conditioned stuff from when I was younger, which tells me that being a man means being "the bread-winner," and that cleaning the house is "women's work," and that sort of thing. I don't "believe" in any of that, but there it is underneath everything. It pops up to try and make me feel bad when I'm not living up to that wrong standard of manhood. All I can do is keep fighting it. It is a process. If I keep at it someday maybe those feelings will not be there anymore. That's already happened for me with some things which weren't quite as drilled into me as this was.
